Wondering what to wear in the Cook Islands for your upcoming trip to Rarotonga or Aitutaki? You’ve come to the right place! We recently visited the Cook Islands for the first time and I was genuinely surprised by the weather and what I actually needed to pack. Little did I know that I should have packed more casual layers and fewer dressy pieces than I did!
Don’t head to one of the most beautiful island chains in the world underprepared. Keep reading for a complete guide to what to wear in the Cook Islands!
Weather & Seasons in the Cook Islands

The Cook Islands enjoy a pleasant, sunny tropical climate year round. Average highs typically fall in the high 70°s to low 80°s F, with average lows in the high 60°s to low 70°s F. We were pleasantly surprised by just how comfortable the climate was — it wasn’t nearly as hot and humid as we expected.
Cook Islands Seasons
Overall, the key to dressing well in the Cook Islands is layering. It can get cooler than expected during periods of cloud cover, on windy days, and especially in the evenings. The islands are also very laid back and casual, so you’ll want to pack comfortable, relaxed outfits and leave anything too dressy at home.
Cook Islands Outfit Guide: Tops & Pants
To save space in your suitcase, focus on mix-and-match tops and bottoms that can create multiple outfit combinations. Pack a couple of tops for each bottom to maximize your options, and prioritize lightweight, breathable pieces that can be dressed up or down and easily layered.
Tanks and Tees
Pack a selection of casual tanks and tees as the foundation of your outfits. Tank tops and short-sleeve shirts work well for most of the trip. As long as you have a layering piece on hand, long-sleeve shirts on their own likely won’t be necessary.
Shorts
For visits during the hotter months, a pair of shorts is essential. Stick to cotton or linen styles to stay cool and comfortable. Leave the bulky denim shorts at home — they take up precious luggage space and can feel far too heavy in the humidity.
Linen Pants
Linen pants are an excellent bottom choice for the Cook Islands. They keep you warm on cooler days while still being breathable enough for the humidity. Pair them with a tank or tee and a light layer and you’re set for a day of exploring or a casual dinner out.
What to Wear in the Cook Islands: Dresses
While the Cook Islands are generally quite casual, you’ll want at least a dress or two in your suitcase. A casual vacation dress is perfect for dressing up for dinner and capturing photos on the beach.

T-Shirt Dress
A comfortable, casual t-shirt dress is a great alternative to pants and a top — and it’s perfectly suited for warm days and the relaxed restaurants around Rarotonga and Aitutaki.
Sundress
While most of our trip was fairly casual, it’s worth packing one or two nicer sundresses for fancier resort dinners and beach photos. I packed just two nicer options and found that was plenty.
What to Wear in the Cook Islands: Athleisure
There is no shortage of places to explore in Aitutaki and Rarotonga. Bicycling, hiking, and scootering are popular activities on both islands. Whether you want to see the sights or you are a more active and adventurous traveler, you will definitely want to pack comfortable athletic wear for casual and athletic activities.

Rompers
I packed two athletic rompers and found them to be a perfect option for exploring the island by golf cart or scooter, or for a casual trip to the local market. When I got a little chilly or wanted extra coverage, I simply threw my button-up shirt over the top. These also pull double duty as cover-ups over your swimsuit — a great space-saving option!
Athletic Dress w/Shorts
I love a good athletic dress, especially one with built-in shorts. It’s a cute, casual alternative to yoga pants or athletic shorts for a day of island exploring.
What to Wear in the Cook Islands: Layers
The Cook Islands can get surprisingly cool in the evenings, during periods of cloud cover, and throughout their winter dry season. I found a couple of light layering pieces to be absolutely essential — don’t leave home without them!

Button Up Shirt
A button-up shirt you can throw over your outfit when the temperature drops is a must. I wore my chambray button-up nearly every single day of our trip! It worked perfectly layered over dresses, linen pants, and athletic wear alike — and it was especially necessary during our trip, as a nearby tropical storm kept the sun largely hidden.
Light Jacket
Depending on the time of year you travel, you may want to pack a slightly heavier layer, such as a light jacket or denim jacket, for cooler winter evenings.
What to Wear in the Cook Islands: Beachwear
If you’re visiting the Cook Islands, chances are you’re coming for the beaches — and they do not disappoint! You’ll of course want to pack swimsuits and cover-ups for your trip. And don’t worry about beach season — even during the cooler months, you can still enjoy a relaxing day on the sand.

Swimsuits
Whether you prefer a bikini or a one-piece, I recommend packing at least two swimsuits so you always have a dry one ready to go.
Cover Ups
It is the norm to cover up your swimsuit when leaving the beach in the Cook Islands, so make sure to pack one or two cover-ups for throwing on over your swimwear.
What to Wear in the Cook Islands: Shoes
The good news is that you don’t need anything fancy on your feet in the Cook Islands. Leave the heels at home and pack a pair of sneakers, a pair of flip flops, and a pair of dressier flat sandals — that’s all you need!
Casual Sandals
Pack a pair of sturdy flip flops for beach days, or a pair of walking sandals if you plan to do a lot of exploring around the island.
Dressy Sandals
A pair of dressy flat sandals to wear with nicer dresses and to dinner is a must. I recommend flats specifically — the islands are very casual and I didn’t see anyone in wedges or heels during our entire trip.
Sneakers
A good pair of sneakers is essential both for traveling to the Cook Islands and for exploring once you’re there. A classic pair of white sneakers is my top recommendation.
Water Shoes
Water shoes are an absolute must in the Cook Islands. The waters are home to an extremely venomous species of fish called the Stonefish, which can camouflage itself among the rocks on the ocean floor. Please make sure to wear water shoes whenever you’re in the ocean — this is not one to skip!
What to Wear in the Cook Islands: Accessories
You don’t need to pack many accessories for the Cook Islands — keep it simple! A crossbody bag, a beach bag, a pair of sunglasses, and a sun hat are really all you need.

Sunglasses
Pack one or two pairs of sunglasses, and I’d recommend keeping them on the affordable side in case a pair gets lost or damaged on the trip. Amazon has some great options!
Crossbody
Skip the full-size purse and opt for a small crossbody bag or sling bag instead. Having your hands free while exploring the island makes a huge difference.
Sun Hat
Don’t forget a sun hat! Whether you prefer a casual ball cap or a wide-brim straw hat, either works perfectly for the Cook Islands.
